If you are searching for a Wave invoicing alternative, you probably like what Wave does well, which is free invoicing for small businesses, and want to know what else is out there. This page compares Wave with PayToMe (beta) as of October 2026, using only what Wave states on its own pricing and invoicing pages. PayToMe is a young product, so we are upfront about what is live and what is still in development.

Who each is best for

Wave is a good fit if

  • You want invoicing and light bookkeeping in one free account.
  • You are comfortable paying card processing fees only when customers pay online.
  • You want bank transaction imports, which Wave describes on its Pro plan, subject to your bank being supported.
  • You need a product with a long track record, since Wave’s pages show it has been running since 2010.

PayToMe is a good fit if

  • Your main pain is the time spent writing invoices and chasing late payers, not bookkeeping.
  • You like the idea of describing a job in plain words and reviewing a draft.
  • You want a free plan with clear daily and monthly limits and a simple upgrade path.
  • You are happy to start on the Free plan at app.paytome.si and add paid features as you grow.

If you already depend on Wave’s accounting, PayToMe is not a drop-in replacement. It may fit better as a billing front end alongside whatever you use for your books.

A Wave alternative: where PayToMe is different

We do not claim PayToMe does everything Wave does. The differences are about focus.

Speed of creating an invoice

Wave uses the familiar form: pick a customer, add lines, send. PayToMe lets you describe the job, for example “twelve hours of design for Acme at one hundred an hour, due in two weeks”, and Via prepares the draft. You review every number before anything goes out. This is described in AI invoicing, and Via is live in beta, so you can try it on a real invoice.

An assistant that asks before it acts

Via never sends anything without your confirmation, and totals are computed by a tested invoice engine, not by the language model. The same engine already powers the free generator.

Collections as a core job

Wave’s Pro plan includes automated late-payment reminders on a fixed schedule. PayToMe’s smart reminders aim to adjust the follow-up to the client and the invoice, with you approving the messages. Smart reminders are in development.

Clear free limits

PayToMe’s Free plan is 100 invoices a day, 500 a month and 1,000 in total. For most solo businesses that is plenty, but if you send thousands of invoices, a plan with no stated cap such as Wave’s Starter is a better match.

Free tools, no account needed

You can create a PDF with the free invoice generator without an account, or work out interest with the late fee calculator. To send invoices and get paid, sign in to the Free plan.

Pricing comparison

Prices below are as of October 2026. Wave’s come from its pricing page, and PayToMe’s are its own plan prices in US dollars.

Item Wave PayToMe (beta)
Entry plan Starter, $0 Free, $0
Mid plan Pro, $19/month or $190/year Pro, $12/month or $120/year, 3,000 invoices a month
Top plan None listed beyond Pro Business, $39/month or $390/year, 15,000 invoices a month
Card payments, entry plan 2.9% + $0.60 per transaction Through Stripe
Card payments, Pro 2.9% + $0 for the first 10 transactions each month, then Starter rates Through Stripe
Amex 3.4% + $0.60 (Starter) Through Stripe
Bank payments 1% with a $1 minimum, per Wave’s invoicing page Bank transfer through Stripe
Receipts Receipt capture is an add-on, from $11/month on Starter Receipts for paid invoices are live

A few notes from Wave’s own page:

  • Wave also lists a CAD price for Pro, $25 a month, and says Pro pricing is per business.
  • Online payments require eligibility approval, including identity verification and a credit review.
  • Support is live chat or email on weekdays, Eastern time.
  • Bookkeeping and payroll are optional paid add-ons.

The honest summary: Wave’s free plan is hard to beat on price if you need unlimited invoices. PayToMe’s value is meant to be time saved on creating and chasing invoices, not a lower fee. Check the PayToMe pricing page for the current plans.

Switching notes

You do not have to choose all at once.

  1. Export your customer list from Wave. Keep it as a spreadsheet, so your contacts are not locked in any tool.
  2. Keep your accounting where it is. If Wave holds your books, leave them there until you have a replacement you trust.
  3. Try a PayToMe invoice for free. Sign in to the Free plan, or use the free invoice generator, for a few real invoices and see whether the layout and math suit you.
  4. Move new clients first. Send new invoices from PayToMe and leave old invoices where they are.
  5. Do not change payment processors mid-invoice. Let open Wave invoices finish before you change anything, so customers are not confused about where to pay.

What we could not verify

We did not find a statement on the Wave pages we read about AI features, an invoice cap on Starter, or a public API, so we have not made claims either way. Wave may have added features since we checked. Read Wave’s pages before deciding, and see our comparison hub for other tools.

Frequently asked questions

Is Wave really free for invoicing?

As of October 2026, Wave's pricing page lists a Starter plan at $0 with unlimited invoices and estimates. Taking card or bank payments through Wave carries processing fees, and online payments need Wave's approval first.

Can I move my clients from Wave to PayToMe?

PayToMe (beta) has no import tool yet. You can export your client list from Wave, keep it as a spreadsheet, and add clients in PayToMe as you invoice them. The free invoice generator also works for one-off invoices with no account.

Does PayToMe replace Wave's accounting?

No. PayToMe is invoice-first and does not plan to be a full bookkeeping product. If you rely on Wave for accounting and bank imports, you may keep it for that and use PayToMe only for billing.

Is PayToMe cheaper than Wave?

PayToMe's Free plan allows 100 invoices a day, 500 a month and 1,000 in total, and Pro is $12 a month or $120 a year with 3,000 invoices a month. Wave's Starter plan has no stated invoice cap. Which is cheaper depends on your volume and on payment fees.

When will PayToMe's AI assistant be available?

Via, the assistant, is live in beta. Free includes 50 Via actions a month, Pro 1,000 and Business 5,000. Sign in at app.paytome.si to try it.
