What does due on receipt mean?

Due on receipt means payment is expected as soon as the invoice is received. Learn when to use it, how it differs from net 30, and what to write on invoices.

Updated · By PayToMe Editorial

Due on receipt is a payment term meaning the invoice should be paid as soon as the customer receives it. There is no grace period built in, unlike terms such as net 30, which give the customer a number of days.

How it works

When you set “due on receipt” on an invoice, the due date is the same as the invoice date. The clock starts when the customer gets the invoice, so the sooner you send it, the sooner you are paid.

In practice the phrase can feel vague. Some customers read it as “pay right now,” while others treat it as “pay this week.” To avoid confusion, many businesses write both: “Due on receipt, please pay within 3 days.” That keeps the term firm while leaving a clear expectation.

Due on receipt works best when:

  • The job is small or finished the same day.
  • The customer is new and you have no payment history.
  • You are a consumer-facing business, such as a repair or personal service.
  • Paying is easy, for example through an online link or card.

Because the wait is shortest, it lowers your days sales outstanding and helps cash flow. If you want to reward fast payment on longer terms, consider an early payment discount instead.

Example

A handyman repairs a fence and bills $340.00.

Tips

  1. Write the term on the invoice and on your quote, not only in email.
  2. Add a payment method to the invoice so there is no reason to wait.
  3. Send the invoice the same day you finish the work.
  4. If you charge late fees, state the amount or rate. The late fee calculator can help you test numbers.

Frequently asked questions

Does due on receipt mean the client must pay immediately?

It means payment is due as soon as they get the invoice, with no grace period built in. In practice many people pay within a few days, so state a clear date if you want certainty.

Can I charge a late fee on a due on receipt invoice?

Only if your agreement says so. Write the late fee terms on the invoice and in your contract, and check your local rules on fees and interest.

Is due on receipt better than net 30?

It gets you paid sooner, but clients may push back. It suits small jobs and one-time customers. Larger clients often insist on net 30 or longer.
